Kandhamal MP Dr.Samanta Demands for Kalinga Regiment

NewDelhi(News Time Pro):

Kandhamal MP Dr. Achyuta Samanta met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and requested him to set up Kalinga Regiment in Indian Army. A regiment in the name of ‘Kalinga’ will recognize the past glory of the State of Odisha. Since decades, Odias have been providing their valuable services towards the safety and security of the country serving in different positions in the Indian Army. Many of them have earned glory in lieu of their sacrifices and services. Once the regiment comes into force, many Odia jawans can be assimilated in the same.
Punjab, Jat, Assam, Arunachal Scouts, J&K Light Infantry, Garhwal Rifles, Madras, Sikkim, Maratha Light Infantry and Rajput are few affiliated Regiments in different regions and states. So the demand for a separate Kalinga Regiment is justified, Dr. Samanta said. Considering the importance of the Paika Rebellion in the Indian independence struggle against the British, the creation of such a Regiment will organise regional pride under one umbrella within the Indian Army. The creation of a Kalinga Regiment will honour Odia Paikas, as well as unite Odias in one patriotic banner, he stated.

He also requested to consider opening a campus of the Army Public School/Sainik School in Kandhamal parliamentary constituency. The district of Kandhamal is ideally located with plenty of hilly areas around and a generally temperate climate, which will be ideal for setting an Army Public/Sainik School catering to students across the country. Further, Kandhamal is also located close to the state capital of Bhubaneswar, which is well connected with the rest of the country by rail, road and air. This will ensure that students can reach their centre of education with ease. The region of Kandhamal also has a high percentage of tribal population, which will ensure that the local tribal community is benefited from ancillary businesses which will come up. Some of these very talented tribal students can also find their way into the coveted Army Public School and be taught those very virtues and strengths integral to an officer of the Indian Army, Dr. Samanta added.

After discussion with Dr. Samanta, the Defence Minister said, the state government can give a proposal to Govt of India institutionally, so that it will be easy to take necessary steps on the above issues.
