Young Astronomer Talent Search Competition Organised By Tata Steel In Association with Pathani Samanta Planetorium

Young Astronomer Talent Search (YATS) Programme was organsied today in three schools in nearby villages of the Tata Steel BSL plant at Nrendrapur, Dhenkanal. This is the 13th edition of YATS oransied by Tata Steel in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Bhubaneswar, Government of Odisha. Around 400 students of Gopabandhu High School, Khaliberena, Sanjapada, Hindol, Parikula High School Parikul, Paik-Purunakote, Hindol, Dhenkanal, Indira Gandhi Girls High School Banarapal, Angul,participated in the programme. Mr Bibhuti Bhushn Mishra, Head Master, Khaliberena, Sanjapada, Mr Dibayhas Ray, Head, CSR, Tata Steel BSL, Mr Subhransu Panda, Corporate Communications, Tata Steel BSL, Mr Sarbeswar Nath, CSR officer, Tata Steel BSL, other school teachers were present at the school and awarded the winners in quiz competitions conducted at the school. Similarly, Mr Prasant Kumar Dhar, of Gopabandhu High School, Smt Biyalaxmai Das, Headmistress of Indira Gandhi School and other teachers were present during the programme in their respective schools. Around 31 schools of Dhenkanala and Angul disricts to be covered under this programme.

13th edition of YATS was launched by Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik on June 3, 2019 in Bhubaneswar. The theme for YATS 2019 is “Unravelling the wonders of the universe” and includes the following competitions:
An open-quiz (for students of classes 6th to 10th)
An essay competition (for students of classes 9th and 10th).The top two essay entries will be selected from each district and winners will be invited to the grand finale to be held in Bhubaneswar on December 12-13, 2019, the birth anniversary of Pathani Samanta. The top 20 winners will also be felicitated on the occasion, and later taken on an exposure visit.

Tata Steel is organizing this flagship event, YATS, in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium since 2007 to acknowledge the exemplary contribution of Pathani Samanta, legendary astronomer of Odisha, and encourage youngsters to showcase innovative concepts on various themes of space science and astronomy. In last 12 years 1,38,000 students have participated in YATS and 160 winning students have had the opportunity to visit various facilities of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in India.
