Tata Steel BSL bagged the second rank in the prestigious IconSWM Excellence Award 2019 for implementing effective waste management and resource recovery towards environmental protection during 9th International Conference on Sustainable Waste Management towards Circular Economy for its plant located at Narendrapur in Dhenkanal district Odisha. On behalf of the company Mr Subodh Pandey, Chief Operating Officer received this award from Prof. Dr Sadhan K Ghosh, Chairman, IconSWM and President, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University and Mr G Mathi Vathanan, IAS, Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Government of Odisha. Mr Saroj Banerjee, Chief, Environment, Senior Manager, Environment Mr Santosh Pattajoshi and Ms Sanghamitra Mishra, Tata Steel BSL were present at the award ceremony organised at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar on November 27, 2019.
Mr Pandey said, “We are honoured to be recognised with this prestigious award for our sincere efforts on waste management and sustainable environmental practices. This is a small step in our journey of environmental performance and I believe this will motivate our team to excel further in the same direction while reaffirming our commitment towards environment protection.”
Tata Steel BSL had applied for IconSWM-CE Excellence award 2019 under the aegis of International Society of Waste Management, Air and Water (ISWMAW). It presented the best practice it follows on overall environment sustainability like power generation through waste heat recovery boilers in DRI plant, Gas fired boilers using waste gases (BFG-Blast furnace gas ,COG-Coke oven gas),Reduction of carbon emission and specific energy consumption by increasing PCI (Pulversized coal injection ) rates in Blast furnaces, Enhanced utilization of scrap in Steel making process, etc. and several others energy efficiency projects implemented in our process plants and power plants, Management of soild waste using 3R (reduction, reuse and recycle) approach with specific focus on enhanced utilisation of LD slag, , Green supply chain initiatives, etc.
The Jury members were comprised of senior executives, eminent environmentalists, Academician, Sustainability professionals ,Researchers and scientists from State Pollution Control Board, Water resources department, NGOs and Professors from Universities.Tata Steel BSL was the only Steel Company to participate in the event along with more than 20 other companies from cement, fertiliser and other industries.
